GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) will honor renowned singer and pianist Bobby Wetherbee, Provincetown’s longest performing cabaret artist, with the Justice For All Award at its 42nd annual Summer Party on July 22. Drag star Varla Jean Merman will emcee the festivities, which take place at the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

“Bobby Wetherbee embodies why Provincetown is a cherished haven for LGBTQ people worldwide: his welcoming and affirming spirit, his pride in being a gay man and living authentically, and the joy and connection he brings to so many with his outsized talent are magnetic,” said GLAD Executive Director Janson Wu. “We’re thrilled to honor Bobby this year for his singular contributions to Provincetown’s community and culture over six decades.”

Wetherbee first began performing in Provincetown in 1963, captivating audiences with his seemingly effortless musical skills, buoyant performances, charisma, and stamina. Over the years he became one of the biggest draws in town, beloved for his repertoire of American Songbook standards and classic showtunes, and a generous performance style that welcomes audience sing-alongs and solos by his professional colleagues. Wetherbee cultivates a welcoming environment where people from diverse backgrounds can unite and celebrate their shared experiences. He continues to pack crowds at The Dive Bar and Tin Pan Alley, drawing audiences eager to experience his infectious energy and sophisticated fun. Wetherbee has previously been recognized for his artistry and longevity with a key to Provincetown and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Provincetown CabaretFest.

“It’s a thrill and a gift to welcome people to this magical town—just as I was welcomed so many years ago—and help them connect with each other through music. Likewise, GLAD’s legal work makes it possible for LGBTQ people to live openly and more safely, which lets us come together and build community. I’m grateful and proud to be honored by GLAD, especially right here in Provincetown,” said Wetherbee.

In addition to honoring Wetherbee, GLAD’s Summer Party will feature celebrity emcee Varla Jean Merman, fun-filled live and silent auctions including custom art, travel experiences, family adventures and other unique items, an open bar, delicious food, and spectacular views. Families are welcome to bring their children and fun kids’ activities will be provided.

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum is mobility accessible and ASL interpretation will be provided. Get tickets and sponsorships for the Summer Party.
