Statement of GLAD Transgender Rights Project Director Jennifer Levi:
This week we’ve seen two new cruel attacks on the LGBTQ community by the Trump administration.
On Wednesday, the Department of Housing and Urban Development proposed removing vital protections for transgender people in access to homeless shelters.
And today, the Department of Health and Human Services announced a proposed rule that would open the door to increased discrimination in healthcare. The proposed rule would change the interpretation of the Affordable Care Act’s nondiscrimination provision to no longer include LGBTQ people.
Let me be clear – this Administration cannot redefine federal law on a whim.
But there is no mistaking this Administration’s intent to undo both public health and LGBTQ rights. These actions send a dangerous signal and will encourage more discrimination against already vulnerable people. I assure you, GLAD will do everything in our power to ensure we don’t move backwards.
You can take action:
-
- Visit www.protecttranshealth.org to submit a comment opposing the proposed rule that would change the interpretation of the ACA’s nondiscrimination provision to no longer include LGBTQ people.
- Know your rights! Contact us at www.GLADAnswers.org for information about your rights, and let us know if you experience discrimination.
- Donate to support GLAD’s fight against attacks on LGBTQ rights, and our ongoing work to advance protections for every member of our community.
