Statement of GLAD Executive Director Janson Wu on Trump Administration Announcement to Rescind DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

We are outraged by President Trump’s decision today to rescind DACA, a politically motivated move that would upend the lives of roughly 800,000 young people, including over 75,000 LGBTQ people, and their families who relied on this program. With access to education and employment, DACA recipients contribute to our communities and our economy. Welcoming and including immigrant youth and their families not only strengthens but unites our nation. The xenophobic rhetoric coming out of Washington, D.C. seeks to justify harming thousands of young people and their families. Trump’s political pandering, at the expense of those who relied on DACA, is disgraceful, cruel, and un-American. We urge members of Congress to swiftly pass the DREAM Act of 2017 and allow our immigrant youth and their families to thrive. At a time when our dedication to our nation’s foundational principles – life, liberty, justice, equality – is being called into question, GLAD remains committed to fighting alongside our allies for justice for all. We are stronger together in this one justice movement.
