New Momentum for Transgender Non-Discrimination Protections in New Hampshire
GLAD has been working with local partners, including Transgender New Hampshire, to lay the building blocks to winning statewide gender identity non-discrimination protections in New Hampshire.
On March 3, Portsmouth has an opportunity to add a critical building block by being the first city in New Hampshire to provide crucial employment protections for transgender people.
Portsmouth city councilors will consider a proposal brought by Assistant Mayor Jim Splaine: A Resolution Directing the City Manager to Adopt a Policy of Non-Discrimination Regarding Transgender Municipal Employees and Supporting Statewide Anti-Discrimination Protections for Transgender Individuals.
Passage of the resolution would make Portsmouth the first city in New Hampshire to provide crucial employment protections for transgender people, as well as send a message of support for statewide protections in all areas.
GLAD Attorney Janson Wu, who is leading GLAD’s work on this issue, told a recent meeting of the Seacoast Media Group editorial board that the Portsmouth resolution is “a tremendous opportunity to educate the general public about what it means to be transgender.” See: Taking a Stand for Transgender Rights in Portsmouth
New Hampshire is the only state in New England to have no non-discrimination protections in place for transgender people.
