Join GLAD’s Board of Directors

GLAD is seeking diverse, talented, and committed new board members to advance our mission of advancing justice for the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV.

GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization governed by an all-volunteer board of directors that has primary governance and fiduciary responsibilities for the organization. Up to 25 directors can serve at one time, and each Board member can serve up to 5 consecutive two-year terms for a maximum total of 10 consecutive years on the Board.

Making History, Changing Lives

Since 1978, GLAD has achieved scores of legal and legislative victories – from marriage equality to HIV and transgender rights – to end discrimination based on sexual orientation, HIV status, and gender identity and expression.

Through strategic litigation, public policy advocacy, and education, GLAD works in New England and nationally to create a just society free of discrimination based on gender identity and expression, HIV status, and sexual orientation. Our core organizational values – justice and lived equality; inclusion, equity, and mutual respect; anti-racism, and collaboration – are integral to fulfilling our mission.

Board Core Commitments

All board members commit to the following:

  • Attend and engage at board meetings (7 annually)
  • Join at least one standing committee (Development, Board Affairs, & Finance & Audit committees), including attending and engaging at monthly meetings
  • Make GLAD one of your top three philanthropic priorities and help GLAD raise resources from your network as appropriate
  • Attend GLAD events (virtual and in-person)
  • Serve as a GLAD ambassador by sharing news, updates, and events with your network, and attending other organizations’ events with your GLAD hat on

We follow a strategic process for onboarding and developing new board members to ensure we provide leadership opportunities to anyone interested in deepening their involvement with GLAD.

Applying to Serve

Bring your skills in fundraising, DEI, strategic planning, communications, finance, accounting, or advocacy to GLAD – you don’t need a JD or previous board experience to serve.

If you are interested in becoming a candidate for the Board of Directors, please tell us more about yourself!

After you submit the application form, someone from the Board Affairs Committee will be in touch. Please know that we are unable to provide a specific timeframe for follow-up. Given our thorough, individualized process, each person is reviewed personally.

Thank you for your interest in GLAD! We are very excited to hear from you.
