School should be safe for every student, including LGBTQ+ students who need the support of trusted adults.

SB 272 would be detrimental to the health and security of LGBTQ+ students. If passed, it could lead to the forcible outing of students by requiring teachers and counselors to disclose confidential records with no regard for whether it puts a student in harm’s way. It also specifically singles out transgender youth for a special tier of surveillance in schools, violating students’ privacy rights.

On May 18, the New Hampshire State House voted 195-190 to defeat SB 272, effectively halting progress for this bill.
