Implementing Trans-Affirming Policies at Massasoit Community College
Status: Victory
According to a system-wide policy adopted in 2016, community colleges across Massachusetts are required to use students’ preferred names when possible. But when a transgender student contacted GLAD to tell us that, as he sought to enroll at the Brockton campus of Massasoit Community College, he was told he could not use his chosen name on non-official school records, GLAD intervened. This led to an important step forward for full policy implementation: Massasoit Community College has now published this policy on its website, included it in their 2018-2019 student handbook and committed to training staff on this important policy, in addition to providing transgender cultural competency trainings.
