The brutal murder of Alexa, a transgender woman in Puerto Rico on Monday is horrific and deeply dismaying. Our hearts are with her friends and loved ones.

Transgender people throughout the U.S. remain vulnerable to hate-motivated violence, spurred on by anti-transgender rhetoric, policy, and continued discrimination. We must, and we will, continue fighting to make our world a place where all of us can live our lives in safety, without threat of violence because of who we are.

GLAD rises in solidarity today with the transgender community in Puerto Rico, and with our broader transgender community everywhere. You are not alone, and you are beautiful and valued just as you are.

For those needing additional support today, we encourage you to reach out to resources like Trans LifeLine and the Trevor Project. For those in the New England area, GLAD’s legal information line, GLAD Answers, is available to provide information and resources regarding discrimination.
