Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Provincetown. While I’ve been to PTown in the past to visit family as well as work summer jobs, this time was different. I was there as a Development intern to help represent GLAD as we prepare for our 34th Annual Summer Party. I feel really lucky to be in this particular place, amongst so many passionate and caring GLAD staff — I learn something new from my coworkers every day — and at this particular time, when GLAD is at the forefront of our movement in more ways than one.

First, I took the ferry to the Cape and spent the night with family, and the next day was filled with visiting the Summer Party location and stopping by local businesses to learn more about them and pick up donations for our auction.

Reviewing the snapshots from my 24 hours in PTown, Joni Mitchell’s lyrics from “Both Sides Now” came to mind:

“Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air / And feather canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at clouds that way.”

The theme in my pictures is, indeed, different kinds of clouds.

On the ferry over, the view of the Boston skyline was breathtaking.

And on the drive home, the clouds in PTown were also beautiful.

In between sunsets, I walked up and down Commercial Street, first under the wing of my wonderful coworker, Events Manager Johnny Lin, and then, once I got the hang of things, on my own.

This was a great opportunity for me as an intern to get more of a concrete sense of how GLAD relates to other organizations and businesses, because as soon as I flashed our Summer Party postcard with the GLAD logo to local business owners, many of them showed instant recognition and clearly already had a high regard for the work we do without me even having to give a context for our party and auction.

I spent the day having conversations with both business owners who have already supported GLAD in the past and business owners who had a desire to start supporting us now. It was a unique opportunity to have a window into the vast art and gallery culture that Provincetown has to offer as well as its elegant inns and whimsical boutiques.

For example, I reunited with my former colleague Sydney Cummings, Assistant Manager at Dolphin Fleet Whale Watches, who donated two adult whale watch passes, and I got the chance to meet Jennifer Wells, Manager of the Packard Gallery II, who donated a beautiful seascape framed giclée Anne Packard print entitled “Across the Bay.”

Please do consider attending Summer Party at the Pilgrim Monumen Monument and Provincetown Museum on July 25th. All in all, Provincetown is really quite an escape from the hustle and bustle of life. I’m hopeful that our auction will be a great representation of the distinctive local PTown businesses who support GLAD as well as of other New England-area and national businesses whose work stands out to us.

Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you at Summer Party! You can register and/or donate here.
