Maine High Court Orders New Hearing on Name Change Petition
The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has ordered that a transgender man previously denied a name change request by the Cumberland County Probate Court receive a new hearing on his application.
GLAD had filed an amicus brief in support of A.M.B., the petitioner. Ignoring the well-established legal standard that allows anyone to take a new name as long as it is not for fraudulent purposes, the probate judge had asked personal, intrusive questions about his reasons for the change and ultimately denied it. The High Court’s ruling on June 24 reopens A.M.B’s application for a name change before the probate court.
